For more than a decade, I have participated in the once yearly creation of Black Rock City – ‘a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance’ known as Burning Man – the gathering of tens of thousands of ‘Burners’ in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert (fondly referred to as ‘The Playa’.) It has profoundly influenced who I’ve become, both as an individual and as an artist.
It’s not just the joyful celebration, nor the ambitious art that inspires my annual pilgrimage, but something far less tangible that I repeatedly return to, despite the noisy grandeur of it all.
I have never been able to describe it in words, relying instead on the magic of photography to speak for me.
