Open source software powers a big part of the web, and WordPress is the largest CMS in the world. There are three interesting projects being developed alongside WordPress, but they’d appreciate some more love. That’s where you, me, and John James Jacoby comes in.
John James Jacoby is a well-known fellow in WordPress circles. He’s been working on these projects for quite some time, and has been the driving force behind BuddyPress for a long time. But what are these things, really?
WordPress is an enormously powerful and influential project, not just for the internet, but for the entire world to democratize the way we communicate. Sometimes this means Earth-shattering journalism and reporting, other times it means sharing pictures of cats. What matters most is we have the continued freedom to use the software(s) for anything we dream of.
BuddyPress and bbPress are official sister projects because they complement WordPress’s goals so nicely. Where WordPress handles communication, BuddyPress and bbPress handle communities, enabling groups of individuals to congregate, collaborate, and share their thoughts with one another under the same democratic ethos as WordPress.
GlotPress unilaterally enables WordPress, BuddyPress, and bbPress to grow into the rest of the non-English speaking world.
The perks are all about free coffee and love, so reach into your heart and consider how much you’re willing to donate to the open source community.
